Phil Donahue
Phil Donahue died at 88. He once did a show about men wearing skirts while wearing one himself.

Re: Phil Donahue
Phil Donahue was open-minded and ahead of his time. Some of the intolerant comments made my the audience members and callers were sickening. On the other hand, we need to remember that it was 1988 and things were much different with much more homophobia than today.

1988, and still today, many are watching and waiting for some kind of sign.

Re: Phil Donahue
I simply meant that many would be skirt wearers seem to be waiting for some sign or permission that it's okay to do so.

Re: Phil Donahue
That's how I interpreted it, so you were clear enough.
On "The Sign"... If you're waiting for one you are waiting in vain; there will not be one. For one, there is no "central authority" that has the authority to adjudicate that, thus it reverts to the members of society -- I.e. US. Furthermore, humans are herd animals which have a low tolerance for change -- so we are going to stick out like lightning-rods in a storm. Get used to it.
So do not waste your time "looking for a signal". You're not going to receive one. Move on your own.

Re: Phil Donahue
Women follow trends in magazines (Vogue, Cosmo, etc) and watching stars on TMZ and red carpets. It is venues like this that "allowed" women to stop wearing pantyhose and to wear leggings. We men don't have trends to follow.
Re: Phil Donahue
I think if you are waiting for someone in authority to stand up and say it is now OK for guys to wear skirts, you will be waiting a long time.
What we have now here in 2024, as apposed to 1988, is a general acceptance that everybody has a right to be treated equally. This as a result has made most people careful not to cause offence, whatever they feel inside. This is backed up by companies who do not want any legal issues or bad publicity. So here in the UK, I have no problem in living my life, always in a skirt. Obviously I am in a fortunate position with work and family. But the reality is, that it is possible, and the more of us that wear skirts, the easier it will be for others follow suit.
Daily, a happy man in a skirt...
Re: Phil Donahue
Hi Brad, I have to respectfully disagree on this. Women follow fashion trends and fashion shows. There are many fashion shows for men where men are wearing skirts, high heels, stockings, and other items that are considered by society to be feminine. Therefore these fashion displays/shows exist for men, but men will not follow them for fear of being called a faggot which was my nickname growing up. IMHO that is the reason that men's fashion hasn't evolved over the past 100 years. On the other hand, women that try new fashions are praised by other women.
Also, a man could never even watch one of those fashion shows in the presence of other men, just like men cannot hug each other without saying "NO HOMO!".

Re: Phil Donahue
And this is somehow an improvement? I'd beg to differ.
I'd also posit that men do not require "trends" in order to move. We are capable of that independently. It's part of what makes us men.

Re: Phil Donahue
I’ve never been one to follow fashion trends. I create my own fashion as I am an artist who has a passion for art and design. I don’t need the media or society dictating to me if it’s acceptable for a man to wear a skirt. I dress the way I want to dress and feel comfortable wearing those clothes and if I think it looks good it’s an extra bonus because it makes me feel good. I don’t care what society thinks. I’ll put on a skirt or a dress and a pair of tights when I want and I don’t really care if it’s not fashionable or it’s unacceptable for a man to don a skirt.
My name is Arty. I’m a guy with a passion for wearing skirts, dresses and tights and a hobbiest musician and artist.

Re: Phil Donahue
I think if you look at most men on the street, it becomes painfully clear that very few of them have any idea of fashion, never mind following it. Having said that, a lot of the women on the street are in a similar position.

I think I missed the point of your response. Some kind of sign for what?

The sentence was a statement of fact, not a question.
Geez

What's this forum about

People(men) are waiting for the sign that tells them it's OK to wear skirts.
It's been out there many times but men(herd mentality) won't - individually - take
that first step and don a skirt. They won't try something different on their own.
Their image is to uphold the tyranny of trousers and a skirt is beneath them.
Many feel that wearing a skirt means they've lost their "man card".
There's an old saying; "Better to ask forgivness than ask permission"

THE SIGN will not be in flashing neon lights. It will be when one man sees
another man wearing a skirt - AS A MAN. Not a woman wannabe.
Get out there and show other men that it's OK to wear a skirt - the sky will not fall upon them.
