Normal tights - Letting the side down?
Normal tights - Letting the side down?
I have been running an experiment recently. In the warmer weather I decided that 40d stockings were too thick, so I tried 15d stockings only to find the range of colours was limited and the ones I could get didn't seem to last very long. So when I was in my local Tescos I had another look at what was available. The standard 15d tights in boxes of 5 come in at £5, so £1 a pair, when a single pair of stockings on line can easily be £5. Obviously the colours are limited to black and a range of browns, but we work with what we have. I got two boxes, one dark brown and the other black. So far, despite being cheap, these are working very well in my working life. In an odd way I feel that my day to day working wardrobe is settling down to a similar level to pre skirt wearing. On the other hand I feel I am getting boring and drab...
So why am I not going bare legged? with may be socks? or no socks and sandals? or no socks and Birkenstocks?
Two main reasons.
One. I am no lover of socks, I have tried foot socks which I am OK with, but socks clinging round my lower legs I have had enough of in my previous pre skirt life.
Two. I visit clients houses where I remove my shoes/boots. It seams icky and unprofessional to walk round a persons house in bare feet to me IMHO.
As an aside, on holiday I did try my Birkenstocks with bare feet, and my feet didn't like the feeling. I felt if I walked too far parts of my feet would get rubbed and sore. Put 15d tights/stockings on and every thing is fine to walk miles.

Daily, a happy man in a skirt...
Re: Normal tights - Letting the side down?
I'm with you on the socks are uncomfortable side, its just one of these things that has always bothered me. Now living in a cold country, I've usually ended up with both socks and a pair of thick woollen socks over half the year, my feet get very cold... So the other half I'm mostly barefooted, I keep a pair of socks stuffed in my shoes at the door for when I need to go out in them(don't use them with the sandals ofc).
I use thicker tights/leggings during the winter, but even then the wool socks are on over, there home made and loose so don't cause the same sensory issue anyway. I have hairy legs, so I shy away from tights that are not opaque, I don't like the look of the hair under the see through ones.
I use foot/ankle socks at work, they don't cause the same sensory issues and I'd rather not be barefoot in my work shoes, they are smelly enough as it is. You could always keep a pair of socks with you and put them on when you step out of your shoes at a client I guess but I feel, especially in the warmer weather that even the drab colours of brown of black you're not letting anyone down, its not like we have these temperatures 6 months of the year, neither here nor in the UK, you'll be forced back into the 40D coloured ones sooner than you'd like either way.
I think there are plenty of coloured 20D ones too, but as you say, you'll probably have to spend €5 per pair.

Re: Normal tights - Letting the side down?
I hate socks almost as much as I hate trousers. I usually wear tights and in summer would only contemplate sheer ones - max 15d and usually lower and usually in a nude shade, but will occasionally wear black or barely black or with a brown skirt or dress, chocolate ones. I love navy sheers but they are almost impossible to get in shops (I don't buy off the internet). Yesterday I wore a very short dress with bare legs when out shopping and had to add a skirt as I felt so exposed. I find that with sheer tights you get what you pay for and my favourite brand is John Lewis. I have a few pairs of Wolfords but got them at sale prices. With opaque tights I m reluctant to go above 40d as you lose the sense of skirt wearing above that but at least navy is easy to get in opaques.

I don't mind socks so I am biased, but my socks need to be the right length. I have some foot socks but they have a habit of slipping down, I also feel a bit of a fraud, like I'm not wearing socks but secrety I am. So I'm content with ankle socks which I push down to suit my grungy image of myself.Mouse wrote: ↑Wed Jul 24, 2024 8:10 am I have been running an experiment recently. Tights - I have a big pile of them but don't wear them very often. For comfort reasons, they feel like I'm swapping trousers for something worse. Very thin tights are nice but you can see my hairy legs though them. 15d is the best halfway house. I don't want to shave or wax my legs. Hell I don't even shave my chin anymore.
Bare feet? My feet seem to work fine bare in shoes but there's quick deterioation in my shoes if i do it and they can get a bit smelly after a while. Sandals only for me and I only really wear sandals at the beach. There's nothing wrong with sandals so I might bring mine out of retirement.
So the only thing I have to offer is disposable overshoes for client visits?

Re: Normal tights - Letting the side down?
I wear leggings most of the time when wearing a skirt, pinafore dress or T-shirt mini dress. Sometimes I’ll wear thick tights. However, I cannot seem to buy tights that fit me as I am overweight and a size 44 waist and I cannot seem to pull them right up. Ideally a size XXL would fit me in tights but the biggest they sell in the hight street are size XL.
I don’t mind socks as long as they go beyond my ankles but I cannot stand (pardon the pun) socks that go below my ankle.
The only time I go out with bare legs is when I’m wearing my kilt or on the rare occasion shorts.

Re: Normal tights - Letting the side down?
I suppose tights are a good option if socks and stockings are not the go. I am not sure about in hot weather where any added leg covering is not wanted.
Quite so, I puchased some ankle socks by mistake and hated them, always trying to pull them up. I now know what it is like to be told to pull your socks up when you can't.DrFishnets wrote: ↑Wed Jul 24, 2024 9:46 am I don’t mind socks as long as they go beyond my ankles but I cannot stand (pardon the pun) socks that go below my ankle.

I go barelegged with sandals summer and winter - though when the air temperature gets down to 3˚C or lower, and I have to go out for more than 30 minutes, I wear walking boots (Berghaus) and green ex-army surplus socks.

Re: Normal tights - Letting the side down?
Normal (priced) tights can sometimes deliver a pleasant surprise - but not very often.
The least I pay is about £5 for one pair, and that’s rare. £10-15 is my sweet spot, but I’ll go up to £20 occasionally. I rarely exceed £20.
I’ve not worn tights for a couple of weeks. It’s too warm.

I like socks, be they ankle or knee high, and in different colours matching my tops.
Tights are opaque or transparent, mostly black, charcoal, dark grey or ‘skin’.
