This sent me to the fridge to check on the Heinz Tomato Ketchup ingredients: tomatoes, spirit vinegar, sugar, salt, spice and herb extracts (contain celery), spice.crfriend wrote: ↑Mon Jul 01, 2024 2:24 amThat's quite recent, and I'd hoped confined to the USA. Not all that long ago, ketchup was made using tomatoes and vinegar. Now it's made using tomatoes and high fructose corn syrup. I can't stand the new stuff, but one cannot escape it here. Nowadays I use Tabasco Sauce instead -- which baffles everybody around me.

Where's this? I haven't seen Ketchup without much of it being HFCS for years! The stuff one tends to get in the States is a sickly-sweet version of what used to be quite tasty.
Good on ya if you can still find the good stuff!

The great Garrison Keillor used to assure us on the radio that "ketchup contains natural mellowing agents that ward off feelings of utter inadequacy". So I hope the good stuff can still be found on your side of the water

Re: Red or Brown?
I once made a spiced plum ketchup that was very similar to a good tomato ketchup, and I'm sure making one's own tomato ketchup is not that tricky either, once you have got the seeds out neatly (unless you actually want to use high-fructose corn syrup!).

I bought it from Tesco in Rochdale. I assume it’s the standard product on sale in the UK.

I took a look at a squeeze-bottle (WTF?) of Heinz Ketchup at a restaurant yesterday, and it (unsurprisingly) has the US labelling on it. I went for the Tabasco Sauce which hasn't been compromised (yet).

While I will enjoy both Heinz and HP with the right food, HP on a hot dog does not feel right. I'm quite fond of other sauces like béarnaise or red wine with meats and just plain butter or olive oil on things like pasta and potatoes.
