A dress that can change colour on the fly. Would you wear it?

I found an article about a new dress that can change colour on the fly, and even respond to the wearer's movements. The video is amazing. This sort of thing is literally from science fiction.

On the one hand I can imagine that attracting way more attention than I really want. On the other hand it feels like an awesome excuse: these sorts of effects just wouldn't work as well on pants.

Is this something anyone else here would be interested in?

Cool idea. I notice the back half wasn't the same so the change only happened on the front. I'm sure that will be remedied in future models if there are any. That particular dress is not a style that I would wear. Interesting to see if other styles are developed

That is obviously a prototype which has a lot of development ahead, interesting.

The garment had a scaly appearance. It seemed to me that the scales could be programmed to flip between darker and lighter.

I wouldn't wear the dress, but a skirt made of it? Sure. It'd be nice if the panels circled the entire skirt... but sitting would be nearly impossible. If you look at one video in the article:

You can see how they arranged the panels, on flexible circuits.

Just glancing at the research article (https://dl.acm.org/doi/fullHtml/10.1145/3526113.3545625 an interesting read), it sounds like they backed PDLC's with a reflective film, giving the effect of two different colors.

It's unclear to me how one would rewire this in smaller units, and whether voltage requirements would line up with the paper.

Yeah, the back of the dress is probably normal material because otherwise you'd have to stand the whole time. Scaling this down is going to be difficult and machine washable: maybe not. But still, technology is moving so fast these days.

I love the concept. As with any new idea, it will take time for the product to develop,
thus becoming lower in cost to the end consumer. The Amazon link was quite useful

Reminds me of those shirts back in the late 1980s that would change colour with temperature. They were cool...
