I'm guessing anyone can submit a piece to this section of the site?

The comments section appears to be open to anyone - some commenters seem to think the author was pushing her little brother to dress a certain way. I didn't read the article that way, but it is one way to read it:

I was able to read the article, and in no way, shape, or form come across as the woman trying to "steer" her younger brother (who likely has "issues" of his own at the moment). The commentary about men's mental health and the damage done to it by the idiotic insistence of stoicism (see some of my other comments from personal history) are dead on the mark.

It's a well-done and considered article. One that the excessively macho types might consider seriously in thought about their own futures.

This article got me thinking about something on my mind awhile back - about who has it "worse" when it comes to having an occupation atypical for one's gender. The answer IMO are different kinds of discrimination.

Women in male-dominated positions face more "institutional" discrimination than "peer" discrimination, while men in female-dominated positions have it worse the other way around.

For example, male dancers are actually highly sought after (due to the low supply) and thus are largely respected within the industry, but like the article suggests when it comes to the outside world it's a different story. The converse is often true for women in traditionally male fields - they get far less mockery from the general population, but have it rougher getting their foot in and tolerating the work environment.

The problem with the “who has it worst” discussion is it’s a competition you shouldn’t want to lose but the pity aspect makes winning desirable.

Second place there is pathetic.

All kidding aside, when one has it worse than another but both got it bad, why waste time and energy worrying about who’s got it absolutely the worst. The way I see your examples are both need the world to stop being little pricks and just let people do what they do, how they do, when they do cause they wanna do. As long as it’s legal and not impinging on another, of course.
