A feminist glossary
Re: A feminist glossary
Great, we've identified a whole bunch of "isms". When will we simply learn to treat each other with kindness and respect? No need for "isms".
You don't get to judge me by your standards. I have to judge me by mine.

Re: A feminist glossary
And if Carl and Tor may be confused because what I said above is in conflict with what I said here, well... I guess it just is. I have no rebuttal for that, other than it's a real shame that everything I love about western culture is about to go down the tubes (no pun intended) all because of hate, bigotry and intolerance. It's just one of those mental knots I get myself into.
As some (an ever shrinking number of people) say, "as long as there is hate, bigotry, and prejudice, nobody will ever be free".
... and so, where do we go from here? To the new age, or back to the dark age?

Re: A feminist glossary
And as I sit on my computer today, the television is going in the background and Jerry Springer comes on, and it's a "transgender" episode....
I'll spare you all the vulgar offensive dribble, and just state that my face found it's way squarely within my palm as I literally felt the I.Q. of the noon-TV watchers evaporate. I actually feel a little dumber now....
Jenn has changed the channel... to the news.... or from the frying pan to the fire....

Moon I have unfortunately watched a part of several Jerry Springer shows. I say part because I have never lasted longer than about 5 minutes. The whole programme is about confrontation and hate. Physical violence is encouraged and the women to flash their upper wobbly bits which are then greyed -out in order to spare the populace the sight of a couple of nipples. As if anyone doesn't know what a nipple looks like, and don't corrupt the minors by such a sight. Hypocrites and a pox on them. I don't blame Jenn changing the channel, but shame on you - you should have done it.

Dennis no shame on Moon. Moon hardly watches TV in all honesty. Moon spends his days working and when he's not working he's on the café chilling with you guys, flicker or spending time with us watching actual movies and cutting up about his day. I'm not into Jerry Springer I normally watch Steve Wilkos as I like that guy and once it's over Jerry comes on however the moment I see Jerry on I immediately change the channel to the news to catch the weather forecast.

So he really doesn't have much of a clue about what a vast wasteland [0] it is. I'm almost envious of him. I know full well what a barren and void waste the medium (Of course it's a medium. It's neither rare nor well done.) is and so avoid it as much as I can. Like other technologies, "What a dream it was; what a nightmare it's become."JennC03 wrote:[... N]o shame on Moon. Re: A feminist glossary
I used to like the old History Channel documentaries, like the Universe and Modern Marvels. Programs on the Civil War, and other conflicts were also interesting. Though I would have liked to seen more on world history.
For years now, it's just been nothing but Pawn Stars and American Pickers. I can't remember the last time I tuned the channel. And yes, I could care less about TV these days. About the only thing I like to watch is my Star Trek TNG series which I have on DVD, all seven seasons.

Carl, your new definition of medium brought laughter to me and shows what a rich language we have.
As to TV I watch much less now although there are a few science programmes on at the moment particularly about astronomy and the theories of matter, the universe and so on. But they get repeated. The Simpsons is still one of my favourite programmes - the quality of wit and standard of writing is still very high and there have been very few substandard episodes but hundreds of little throwaway lines of humour. Generally, I listen to music more now.
Jenn, thanks for that - you've restored my faith in him. At least I can be assured that he's not regressing into the modern mindless apathetic state.

Sorry, sir, but I cannot take credit for that one. The originator is Ernie Kovacs. I may be good, but I'm not that good.Sinned wrote:Carl, your new definition of medium brought laughter to me and shows what a rich language we have.

I quite realise that your may not have been the originator but ....
.... wait for it ....
.... you were the medium through which the quote impinged upon my consciousness and it was that that I was acknowledging.
Sorry, just couldn't resist that.

Re: A feminist glossary
Ism = I, self, me. Most seem to be made up by those who want to control others by labelling them and their actions. Yet all I have to do, in reality, is allow others to have their own opinions and for them to allow me to have mine.Taj wrote:Great, we've identified a whole bunch of "isms". Re: A feminist glossary
The majority are not always by the right side. Earlier just not. Today I see much anger and fear. That's not a good position for making decisions. I see that intolerance is growing. I hear it much around me. And that is what fears me. It's look like that the world is getting extremistic. Not only the Muslims. I don't like to hear: throw a bomb on whole Syria. Then we have the terrorism. People are thinking in simple solutions. And them give you a right to vote.whorton wrote: You're thinking of the principle of which our country is founded, a democratic Republic, bound by a federal and various state constitutions that in theory, grant us certain inalienable rights- mainly the right to direct our own personal fates and futures provided we bring no harm on others, that we are "free", free from unreasonable government seizure, free to due process of law, equal treatment under the law, freedom to pray to what ever God we want, or no God at all, free from the religious views of others, etc....
A true democracy is when 51% of the population control the other 49%.

And about feminist. I think I'm feminist too. I love equality between men and women. Same chances. Same rights. Same requirements.
And I think enough freedom. With an important constraint: respect each other and let each other in their value. For me it's important... that we can dress what we like. For me is my way of dressing myself a kind of expression. In stead of saying: I'm a man in skirt... I rather say I wear what I like to wear(-movement).

When we learn to drop the biggest ism of all: opportunism.Taj wrote:Great, we've identified a whole bunch of "isms". When will we simply learn to treat each other with kindness and respect? No need for "isms".
Virtually all the isms being claimed and otherwise bandied about are the result of that, as far as I can tell. That's why "racism" and "sexism" no longer mean what we regular folk think they mean. Opportunists have shifted their meanings to be only "systemic bias", not actual personal individual disdain/hate for others based on their skin colour or sex. It fits the "oppressed/oppressor" narrative they employ, implying class war where only systemic inertia is actually at work. "Terrorism" used to mean causing fear as a political tool, but now includes every nutcase whose personal hatred and damaged brain causes him to act out by attacking people. And it was never convenient to call terrorism by its more accurate term "asymmetric warfare" -- no opportunity to whip the masses into a frenzy of fear that will make them yield to any proposed countermeasures. "Conservatism", "liberalism", "socialism", "progressivism", "libertarianism", etctetera are all now more identities than philosophies, and they are used opportunistically by political activists who understand that identity is a stronger motivator than reason and goodwill.
Even kindness and respect aren't enough anymore. Ask any activist and you'll be told that your unconscious biases are what make you the oppressor. We are always the enemy when political and social opportunism runs the world.
