My first real outing
I call this my first "real" outing because I actually had to interact with people. It's small but a step for me. Here's my progression from skirting around the house to going out in public:
1) Getting in the car and driving somewhere secluded to walk around for a few minutes. No one can see me.
2) Going for a walk, where people might be around, though at enough of a distance as to avoid contact.
3) On a road trip, stopping for gas and filling up. Now, people will see me, but it's not a thing where you usually interact with anyone.
And finally tonight:
4) Going into my local drug store for a few things. It was late and the place was essentially empty, but I had to not only be seen in my skirt, but interact with the cashier.
It went well, though a cashier at the drug store isn't usually going to hassle a customer over his skirt. The two cashiers might have chuckled to each other after I left but oh well, I can now get over it. The skirt I wore was a black, knee length pleated skirt that I had sewed myself, attempting to create a skirt for a man. It has belt loops and pockets and is shaped for my waist. Since the weather was cooler I wore a gray hoodie zip-up sweatshirt, which I think softened the whole man in a skirt shock. It certainly helped me to go out knowing that my skirt was a man's skirt, and I looked enough like a normal guy, just in a skirt. I like the look and I'll probably use it again when I go out.
I thought I would share my experience tonight to anyone else that's very shy about going out my story of how I worked my way up. I'm quite shy and nervous about skirting, since in my normal public life you'd never guess I would own a skirt. Thanks for reading!

Welcome to the board! Well, I say that, but you've apparently been here for over a year! Well then, welcome to the world of posting to the board! LOL
I'm glad you made your way into the sea of society with a skirt on!
I think you will find that as you do this more and more it does become somewhat second nature.
Also, kudos on creating your own skirt! That's a skill I have yet to master.

Well done Midwest4455 - as Moonshadow says, it quickly becomes second nature to go out in a skirt.
And well done on making your own - any chance of a picture of it?

Great to hear of another "virgin" skirted man and his first steps out!
Hope to hear more from you.
Small steps are fine - think most of us here have done that just to break the ice and test the water.
Good for you and welcome to the site!
BTW, I too am a fairly quiet and shy type and would never have thought I could ever venture out either! Glad I did though!

Re: My first real outing
Midwest4455,
Congratulations on making that Oh-so-difficult first outing. I know how my first encounter with a stranger felt and can well understand your hesitation and perceived need for a progression.
One of the advantages of wearing skirts that I have discovered is that people are more inclined to talk to me. I am naturally a fairly quiet and retiring individual and not good at starting conversations, so that has been a bonus to me. Over time, I have also discovered that my self-confidence has grown significantly and I attribute this directly to my skirt habit.
Have fun,
Ian.

Well done, those first steps out and about are the hardest but you did it, and I know exactly how you felt. I've been out quite a lot but I'm still only going to what I would call safe places, I've yet to face walking around a buzy town center close to home, but I have braved the up market towns a few times. Try not to leave too big a gap between going out.

Re: My first real outing
Remember, you are not there to show people that you are wearing a skirt, that is merely incidental. You are there to look at prices, to buy things and to walk from shop to shop in a perfectly normal and legal maner. You will also find people smile at you a lot more, so be prepared to smile back in a friendly way (without the momentary pause while you think "What are they up to?"
From time to time the skirt will remind you of what you are wearing (in a gust of wind or in the supermarket aisle with cold air coming out of the freezers and flowing around your legs), but this is just one of the little pleasures of wearing a skirt in public and should make you smile even more.

There is no such thing as a normal person, only someone you don't know very well yet.

Congratulations and good show! From here it only gets easier.midwest4455 wrote:...I call this my first "real" outing because I actually had to interact with people...
As you're finding, wearing a skirt in public is a very small deal to the public.
Courage, conviction, nerve, verve, dash, panache, guts, nuts, balls, gall, élan, stones, whatever. Get some and get skirted.

Re: My first real outing
Congratulations! It does only get easier every time you go out. First you are thinking "I'm so brave… I bet everyone is looking at me". Then you realize almost everyone is not looking at you, and if they are, so what? Then your main thought becomes "I'm having so much fun! This feels so great!" And then eventually you stop thinking about your skirt except for the general comfortable feeling it gives. Onward and upward… keep on skirting!

It's true what they all say above! I've been doing this since July, and it's simply second nature now! My wife will occasionally inform me of some dirty looks or giggles, but I find that I don't even notice them any more.

Welcome to the wonderful world of interaction with society. Well done!
I never had a problem with coming out to other people, in fact I enjoy the various reactions, sometimes even the negative ones...
I found coming out to my family, especially MOH, was quite a bigger issue to me.

Thought so too. Until yesterday. While filling up I noticed a car stopping in front of me. So far nothing unususal, he was just waiting for the next free pump, I thought. But when I looked up, I saw him holding a cell phone in my direction, taking several photos. I was wearing a blue jeans skirt with black leggings and judging by his look, he had never seen anything like that before. Just wondering when my picture shows up on Facebook now...3) On a road trip, stopping for gas and filling up. Now, people will see me, but it's not a thing where you usually interact with anyone.
If you're always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be.

Re: My first real outing
If that happened to me I would be tempted to walk over and say "Is there something particularly interesting about my car?" If he then mentions the skirt, I'd give him the best two-word explanation possible: "It's comfortable".Barefoot Joe wrote:... While filling up I noticed a car stopping in front of me. I'd start posing.

That means it's working. Have fun with it. If they say something, tell 'em they should try it.moonshadow wrote:...My wife will occasionally inform me of some dirty looks or giggles...

Re: My first real outing
I don't know if this could call this a real first real outing or not as it was a quick errand I had to run. I had my sport coat on while eating brunch one Sunday after church and I accidentally put the sleeve in the ketchup on my french fries and it made a mess. I tried wiping it out but to no avail. Later that week working at home wearing a denim skirt I realized I need to go to the cleaner with my sport coat. Hopped in the car and off to the cleaner wearing my skirt. At the cleaner got out took my sport coat out and into the cleaners I went. The gal that worked there was sitting behind a desk in front of a big window as I got out of the car she saw me and went to the counter and took care of business. A couple of days later when I went to pick it up the same thing but it was a different gal this time. She asked my name pushed the button to bring my sport coat around. I paid and left. Neither time was anything said. One evening while watching TV before a program I wanted to watch came on I went to the local DQ for some ice cream. Again wearing my skirt rather than using the drive-through I parked and walked up to the window. I'm sure those on the inside could tell what I was wearing through all the signs on the window. Just some small chit-chat got my ice cream and back to the car.
