Skirtcraft - Long Skirt

Post by finrod »

I've created a second, ankle-length skirt design for the Skirtcraft project. The description and photos here are identical to a FB post (https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set ... 644&type=1) -- I thought it would be convenient to have all the content available within this post itself.

As far as details like belt loops, the fly, and button, they're identical to those on the earlier, shorter design shown here: http://www.skirtcafe.org/forums/viewtop ... =2&t=17182

Any feedback would be appreciated!

---
We've created a second unisex skirt design during down time while the Freethinker skirt is in product development. Like the first, this design has an A-line shape, angled zipper fly, upper and lower pockets, and belt loops. The differences:

- Ankle-length rather than knee-length.
- Lighter-weight fabric. This particular prototype is twill, but an actual product might be another fabric.
- Full-length side panels which the pockets are built into.
- An additional front seam dividing the larger panel in two, creating a sort of "expanding rays" pattern.

We're not sure what the future of this design will be, since for now we're mostly focused on the shorter Freethinker skirt. We'd love feedback, though. If you have any, please leave a comment or send us a message. Thanks!

That's a very interesting design. I still find the diagonally-placed zip slightly odd, but the way the gores in the front are cut, and seemingly ultimately line up with the straight ones at the hips is quite interesting and creative indeed.

Probably a very practical length for what the weather that is soon to arrive in Minnesota. I own lots of twill (where others wear denim, I wear twill) but nothing in a skirt of that length. What does that feel to walk in? Is your twill all cotton? You might want to try a 97% cotton, 3% spandex twill Lands' End uses for twill pants. It's a very nice fabric with a good hand.

I love the design, especially the angle design in the front panels. Overall, however, the fabric seems a bit stiff -- perhaps some fabric softener?

I like the design and especially the color; I wish the Freethinker skirt would have this color ISO the dark grey.

BUT:::::::please::::::::: skip the diagonal front and back seam, I can't get used to it!

It looks very good indeed. In general I think long skirts look good on men.

Very nice colour.

My only concern is this: how flared is it? There is obviously a trade-off between ease of movement (length of stride) and total amount of material. If you do not use pleats, then a heavy fabric which does not fold much will give it quite a triangular appearance. I like the shape you have here, but I wonder if it leaves enough room for movement.

I do like the design and color of the long skirt very much and the diagonal patterns make it unique. Thanks for publishing your ideas and keep on rocking in skirts.

I really like it, I think you have the flare about right, it looks plenty wide enough for movement without being too flared, similar to most of the long skirts I have, looks like good pockets, I still find the angled fly a bit odd, but other than that, nice!

I'm going to stand up to all these naysayers and say I like the angled seams and zip. They add a little something extra to the whole look. You don't want to just blend in with all the other men in skirts, do you?

The angled seams remind me of a skirt I used to have - see the foot of this link http://www.skirtcafe.org/forums/viewtop ... 4&start=15 . I really liked the look but I got rid of it because it was too narrow and restrictive.

Well, to toss in my $.02 worth ;)

I totally agree with janrock. The over-all design is great.
For me it could use a wider base or fuller skirt to not restrict
anyone's stride. The diagonal lines have gotta go :!:
They are more in-line with a feminine style of skirt.
If you're wanting to have the product appeal to men, a straight
or vertical seam gives a more masculine, firm or rugged look.

Basically, what I would like to see is something along the lines
of a "5-Pocket, Jeans style" from the waist down to the hip.
Then the 'flare' of the skirt would take over. This could be
done with 4 panels of fabric, with the taper to flare starting
about 8-10 inches below the waist.

Something like this.............(please excuse my crude keyboard drawing)

..............******* - - - - - - - - - - - - Waist
..............*******
..............*******
..............******* - - - - - - - - - - - - Hip
.............*********
............***********
...........*************
..........***************
.........*****************
........*******************
.......*********************
......***********************
.....*************************
....***************************
...*****************************
..******************************* - - - - - - Bottom/Hem of the skirt

This will give you an IDEA of what I'm talking about.
( Can't get a real curved line with a keyboard :( )

Thus the same panels could be made long or short
depending on what length of skirt is being ordered.

Again, this is my $.02 worth - YMMV :)

I love it! Unlike many here, I like the diagonal lines; straight up and down is so boring :).

Also unlike many here, I already own a skirt with a diagonal fly zip (the Svenjoyment skirt I bought from B&B) and it works well, looks good and makes the skirt unlike the stuff that can be found on the other side of the aisle in any clothing store.

I would seriously consider this skirt as an addition to my wardrobe. The pocket detailing looks good and ought to work well too. I do think the fabric looks a little too stiff for my tastes, but I suspect it would soften with wear and time. Alternatively a slightly more flexible fabric might be the perfect solution.

Have fun,

Ian.

Question: Are there back pockets as well for wallets?

I too am not a fan of the diagonal seams and zipper fly and would much prefer a straight up and down seam and fly. However, I realize some people do like the diagonal seam/fly. So, why no do what every good business man should/would do and offer a choice for each ordering customer? Let the customer decide if he wants a diagonal or straight seam and fly. Other than that though, I like the length and flare of both the knee length and the maxi length skirts you've advertised, and if a choice was available for a strait seam/fly, I would consider purchasing if the price is right.

It is a skirt, after all, so a fly really serves little more purpose than to facilitate closing the garment around your waist. Still, I am probably like a lot of men in my general affinity for symmetry. However, that doesnt mean perfectly straight seams. I'd like to see the same skirt with straight center seams and curving seams on the other panels. Regardless, I am thinking of buying one once available, depending on price, of course.

That might be feasible if the skirts are made to order. The additional cost of a second design would presumably be quite small. But if Finrod sells from stock, the cost of holding both designs might be prohibitive for a small business.
