Keeping warm in utilikilts

I recently got my first utility kilt and love it. Polycotton like jeans, strips out the impracticalities of a formal kilt (smaller pleats to sit on, less bulk at front, big pockets instead of sporran) but still unmistakably masculine. Now my problem is what to wear on the legs in icy Scottish winter days like today. Somehow tights don't sound right and kilt hose are itchy and too formal looking. Yesterday I walked round Edinburgh all day in a denim skirt to the knees and 60 denier tights, no problem. Bare legs with a UK is another matter. Soccer socks perhaps?

I looked into soccer socks but if they're made to fit over shin guards may be too baggy without.

Baseball socks are knee-high and loaded with elastic so they don't fall down during a game, but I don't imagine you find many of those in the UK.

Do golfers over there ever dress in knickers anymore? If so, those knee-highs may be an option.

I tried some tall socks made for wear under fishing waders. They were warm and comfortable. If you are active they will eventually slip down. Some kind of garter would help.

Ice hockey garters come in men's sizes and work pretty well.

But thanks for the tip about ice hockey garters! – Too many kneesocks just will not stay up. Not a problem in warm weather, but winter does impose its own priorities.

That is a great look! - the tights are available in the UK from the link below. I have been thinking about getting these a pair or two of them but the Tesco own brank black 60 or 80 den is cheaper.
