on the train

Post by couyalair »

One of the problems of being a foreigner is that the locals don't expect you to understand what they are saying, so they either say nothing, or come out with gibberish.
Last night coming home on the train, a young Spanish man mouthed "Engheland?" across the gangway. I answered in Spanish "No, I live here; this skirt is Scottish." He looked neither unfriendly nor impressed, pondered a few moments and tried to say "Mel Jibbeson?" My friends and I had to ponder a moment too, before getting the message. I finally said,"Yes, he's my brother."

Why is it one never gets an intelligent conversation anywhere?

Hi Martin,
In search of an intelligent conversation a train is about the last place I'd look. I travel with my Spouse, in which case there is no need to engage with anyone else and when I travel alone, which is very seldom I bring a jolly good book along.

Another trip is coming up next Friday. We are travelling to Waterford with another couple and I know full well we'll be playing bridge across a table on the way.

Tom.

(1) Because everywhere you go has clueless people, and vacation spots even more so.

(2) Because otherwise life would be dull.

Said the guy in the skirt.
Courage, conviction, nerve, verve, dash, panache, guts, nuts, balls, gall, élan, stones, whatever. Get some and get skirted.
