Petticoats for Winter Wear

Post by mikel »

I have a cozy warm ankle length fleece skirt from MouseWorks that I would like to wear with a petticoat underneath. The temp here in the North Country of New Hampshire have dropped into -15F this week. Having looked at various styles ie straight, tiered or fringed and materials I am still wondering what works best in cold weather. I know that a petticoat is underwear and might be considered off topic, for this I apologize. I value however the opinion of our community. I would like to keep several in my inventory so keeping the price reasonable would help. Ebay has the best prices but again the choices are bewildering. Thanks Mike

I have one of these from Historical Emporium that I really like, but it's fairly long and may not fit under a regular-length Mouse Works skirt. I've also got one of these, but it's even longer and really only works under my ankle-length skirts. Both are good for warmth, but the one I mentioned first is the one that gets the most mileage.

Stuff like this should be pretty easy to make, too, especially is the notion of lace trim makes you uneasy. I bought a Mouse Works fleece skirt primarily to go under the velvet one, but which will probably see use on its own as well. I'll have to see once they arrive, hopefully some time next week. Of note is that I had Ryan alter the design somewhat so I could get both skirts on over my head as trying to pull one up over a petticoat is a losing battle. (BTDT, and wound up getting so tangled in all the fabric that I tripped and fell over.)

Don't you put it on under the skirt, i.e. skirt on first?
Keep on skirting,

I've tried that, but have never managed to get things to look (or work) right.

Putting on the skirt and then the petticoat underneath is partially correct - BUT the skirt (dress) has to have enough room at the waist to position
all the material into place. Tight skirt - a real problem no room. Loose skirt then you would have to depend on the elastics of the petticoat
hold everything up and into place. The three tier petticoats I have - have an internal elastic band fastened with a button tightening the
waist at the top tier. Exaggerated you don't wear petticoats with a pencil slim skirt but one with a real open "A" frame structure.
Square/Line dance dresses are best for picturing this assembly.
Petticoats are best worn under dresses rather than skirts - but don't close the door you just need to have it worn at the actual waist rather
than off the hips (low waist) and the waist band of stretchable elastic material. My three tier petticoat breaks at just above the knee and is
worn with a costume "Dorothy - Wizard of Oz dress" great for Halloween parties but for extreme winter wear just not terribly practical.
The "Dorothy Dress" has a back zip entry so in this case the petticoat is put on first and fastened into place followed by the dress over head
and arms through sleeves - so no conflict here.
Having a long petticoat under a matching length skirt/dress would be great but I don't think that much when one has to climb snow drifts
and wade around slushy roads and gutters. Plain ole dry cold winters fine but you could drown in long fashionable layers of petticoats if
swept away in flood. And you ain't finding any prince charming throwing his cape down for you to ford the stream !
So my preference is fleece leggings or tights worn under a kilt or pleated skirt with suitable footwear to kick winter out of the way.
In the Minnesota hinterland where we have been experiencing temps in double digits BELOW zero and windchill factors of double the posted
actual temp I don't feel comfortable wearing any fashionable gear - frostbite is a terrible element to contend with !
What a way to start the business as usual New Year - Greetings to all - wear your fashionable gear inside the mall and not outside ! LOL !
"YES SKIRTING MATTERS"!
"Kilt-On" -or- as the case may be "Skirt-On" !
WHY ?
Isn't wearing a kilt enough?
Well a skirt will do in a pinch!
Make mine short and don't you dare think of pinching there !
