10 years at the cafe

Post by Charlie »

I just realised that I joined the cafe on 21st October 2003 - 10 years ago :D
Actually, I think it may have been before that when it was Tom's Cafe. I think something happened with the server and all the users were wiped out and we all had to re-register. I know I've been into skirts from around 2000 when I first searched for 'men in skirts' and found the original Tom's Cafe.
It was Tom (God rest his soul) and the other guys in the cafe that gave me the confidence to 'go public' in unbifurcated garments, mainly kilts and sarongs, and I haven't looked back.
So, to all the guys new to skirting, stick with it - confidence grows and as others have said, very, very few people notice or care.

10/21/13 here as well. IIRC, what happened was that the original software took a dump, then Tom put us on the vBulletin forum software, which we had to reregister for, since it was incompatible with the old newsgroup-style software and could not import users. I *think* I originally joined sometime in December 2001 or early January 2002.

Hi Guys,
I hadn't realised that it's been 3 years since I joined.
As a relative beginner, I'd send a thanks for all the encouragement and support I've received over this time.
It's been quite a rollercoaster and it's not over yet.
Steve.

A little over six years of enjoyment on my part, having joined after IMFF fell over. if I remember rightly, the relentless avalanche of spam was too much in the end. Carl and the admin. team do a fantastic job keeping this place free of such rubbish and, just while the subject is here, thanks you blokes, it is much appreciated.

Hi All,
even I am new here, in 2005 I joined a German forum and this guys motivated me to upgrade my fashion style. One of the outstanding personalities of this forum was Ferdi (god rest his soul) who was always happy wearing skirts and his authentic character of a real men in skirts.
keep on skirting to enjoy the freedom of wearing what you want

Ten years is a veritable eternity in Internet Time!

According to the database, Charlie registered on the same day as this forum was instantiated, using some of the data from the old Tom's Café system. The then administrator (Noodles) wanted to retain the "tomscafe" moniker as a tribute, so when the mantle was passed to Bob a new identity had to be created. The result was "skirtcafe.org" and that's what it's been since. A fair number of folks successfully made the transition from Tom's to here which was fortunate, and those are the guys that really are the pioneers in men's skirt wearing. To them, a large debt of gratitude is owed for we truly do stand upon the shoulders of giants.

Sometime in the early 2000s, the software that underlies the forum's functionality changed from vBulletin to phpBB -- this is what likely caused most of the grief to the community. The two systems are similar to one another (which isn't surprising as they do substantially similar things), but the databases were different enough to keep everything from being successfully pulled over from Tom's Café. We've since been though a number of subsequent software upgrades including a major one in 2008 and several minor ones since.

To Sarongman -- Thanks for the kudos to the team in the effort to keep noise and junk under control. It's really appreciated.

I've only been around since 2004 or so, although I was familiar with Tom's and occasionally lurked there, as well as here for the first couple of years. I believe I started dabbling in skirts in 2002 or so, and didn't really get serious about it until 2004 when I formally registered here (and have been an opinionated pain in the backside ever since).
It was Tom (God rest his soul) and the other guys in the cafe that gave me the confidence to 'go public' in unbifurcated garments, mainly kilts and sarongs, and I haven't looked back.

In spite of the number skirt/kilt forums in various languages, and the large number of men who are interested in the subject enough to register, even they few make contributions, I wonder : is the number of skirt-wearers increasing in the real world? In spite of magazine articles and fashion show appearances, we are still not a big enough social phenomenon to be noticed by official statisticians, so we shall probably never know whether we are 1% of the population or only 0,0000001% ; nor whether there has been an change of +0,05% or -5% !
The makers seem to be doing plenty of trade, but, personally, I'm pretty sure of belonging to a completely invisible unchanging minority in both France and Spain.
:-(
Not that that influences my own choice of clothing!

Martin
PS : France + Spain = 100 million/2 = 50M men.
I could name at most 10 skirt-wearers and 30 (occasional) kilt-wearers. Add 10 for the ones I've not heard of.
That makes just 1 emancipated man in a million.

this situation motivates me even more to promote men wearing skirts in order to increase the number of men who lives the freedom to wear what they want. One time, somebody will take the message and give men in skirts a lobby. Important for me is, to have a forum like this to share experiences and publish our opinions.
