Any Skirt Friendly Cities in US & Canada

Post by mikel »

Hi Guys
My wife & I have recently retired and I intend to wear my skirts when we go traveling. Are there any cities where I would more likely find men in skirts or more likely to be accepted in my skirt. Last week we visited Montreal, CA an impressive cosmopolitan city. No skirt wearing guys to be seen!

Acceptance is widespread. Most people are shell-shocked by fashion anyway, and they really don't care what you wear.

I've heard that kilts are more commonplace in Seattle and San Francisco but (1) I have no personal experience with that and (2) I still wouldn't expect to see even one skirted male in any given crowd.

For company you may have to look at Scotish or Celtic festivals, comic-cons, Renaissance fairs, and other countercultural gatherings.

Mike,

To echo Caultron's observations, most cosmopolitan places are fairly accepting. Any large metropolitan center should be fair game. From personal experience, I can state that Boston, New York, and Seattle seem to be comfortable with a bloke in something other than trousers.

Backwoods areas can be problematic, but that can depend on whether you're well-known there or not. Interestingly, in areas where everybody is well-known, things can be remarkably tolerant for individualism.

Regarding Seattle, you can occasionally see a man on the street wearing a Utilikilt.

It's been some time since I've seen another man in a skirt in San Francisco. Not that I've had any problem wearing mine the last couple of weeks (skirt friendly weather finally arrived 8) ). Then again, I'm a bit mature to be hanging out in the trendy parts of town so maybe I'm missing things.

The Seattle-Portland corridor seems to be pretty tolerant. You won't find very many skirted guys out and about, but, most people don't care if there is a guy in a skirt walking down the street.

New Orleans. The only people who will care are the tourists. Locals have no issues with men wearing skirts.

I've not been to many US cities but I have seen a few fellows wearing skirts in San Francisco. One khaki Utilitikilt, one satin full length dress in a dark reddish-purple and a third fellow wearing a knee-length grey satin skirt. That is apart from dozens of other CD's at a Gay Pride march.

I've also seen one fellow in a denim coloured Utilitikilt in Chicago - a visitor to the Adler Planetarium.

Been to NY five times but not yet seen any skirted men there - just a "naked" cowboy in Times Sq. (He wasn't actually naked but he had on a white pair of Y-fronts)

Thanks for the replies. I guess our best policy is to trust the major cities and avoid any "backwater" sections. Last year I wore my kilt while visiting a chocolate factory in a seedy section of Boston with my wife. Some factory workers in an adjacent building whistled at me and embarrassed my wife. It took a while before she felt comfortable traveling with me in my skirt.

'Tis a pity about the response you got in Boston -- and worse that it made your wife uncomfortable. I've been in Boston wearing skirts more times than I can count (mainly because I've lost track), and I have received a few "less than positive" reactions but was able to dismiss those pretty easily -- it's the good reactions that make it all worthwhile, and I've gotten many more of those than bad ones.

I'm getting jealous of all you fine young fellows that get so many responses/reactions when out and about. I have had a compliment or two -- so few in so many years of non-bifurcation! I suppose I should have come out of the closet when I was still tall, dark and handsome.

I don't think it's only age, because I'm 66 and get complimented. It may also have to do with the total look of your outfit, or the places you go, or the crowd you're among, your disposition, or lots of other factors.

I don't get a lot -- maybe one every 2-4 weeks. Some are people who just notice my kilt and feel the need to say something, so out pops, "I like your kilt." It's the old, "If you can't say something nice don't say anything at all," situation. But other people ask me if I'm Scottish, and then sometimes frown or react quizically when I say I'm not. Sometimes they go on to talk about someone else they knew who wore kilts, or wonder where to buy one, or ask if it's comfortable. Sometimes they don't say anything; they just give me a once-over and a nice smile.

Of course, I also get some once-overs followed by frowns but oh well, I freely acknowledge I'm a bit off the mean. Life's just more fun that way.

I have found that I get far more comments when wearing a kilt than when I wear a denim skirt, which mostly gets ignored. I have never had negative comments, maybe my size makes people think better of commenting!
