tourists in Burma
There appears to be a facebook page that makes fun of tourists that adopt the local longyis in Burma. It was referred to in a French tv report :
http://observers.france24.com/fr/conten ... ebook-mode
The text is in French, but the photos have English captions.
Nothing showed up in facebook.
The article makes it look as if the Burmese do not approve of foreigners taking up their comfortable open garments, though I can't see why that would be true. More likely, it's a western journalist showing his own narrow-mindedness.
When I lived in Morocco, I frequently wore thick woolen jellabas in winter and lightweight sleeveless tunics in summer. No Moroccans ever made fun of my copying native dress, but other Europeans did not really approve.

Re: tourists in Burma
From another perspective, were these people just being silly and disrespectful to a "national dress"?
Most Scots don't care who wears a kilt, in fact, it's welcomed.
However, woe betide anyone who wears it to take the "p****s
Steve.

I think, it is needed to know the cultural behaveours of the country what you visit and respect the culture. If the culture do not like to see men wearing traditional garments, dont do it. Here in Botswana, the people do not have a problem when I am wearing dresses like this one
