Hi,
Matalan have clearance centres here and there in the UK- one at Newport, Gwent. Plenty of cheap new skirts in there. Bon Marche also have sale skirts---new elasticated waists for around £5- sometimes less

1) How did you get started wearing skirts or kilts?
Well... for me it started when I bought a Utilikilt back in 2001. I started wearing it to gigs with various bands and that's when I realized how comfortable they are. Shortly after that, I found Nigel's site, IMFF.net and that's what got me into wearing skirts. He had great looking combinations of skirts and shirts... thanks, Nigel!

2) What styles of men's skirts do you prefer?
Mostly around knee length, plus or minus about 2" but I've got an ankle length denim skirt that rocks! I also have a mini that looks cool!

3) What do you think would be the best men's skirt to gain more public acceptance?
Wearing kilts, either traditional or modern styles. The more people get used to seeing men in kilts, the easier it would be for the public to accept men in skirts... my opinion.

4) The types of challenges you have faced?
While out in public, a few stares and double takes from people with a neutral look on their faces, not positive or negative. This, for me, is a confidence builder. It says, "Yes, I'm wearing a skirt!"

5) Tips for others?
Paraphrasing someone here on Skirtcafe [can't remember who said it or where the post is], think about what you're wearing and where you're going. Example... I wouldn't want to wear a miniskirt walking down the street in a high crime area. I know this is an exaggerated example but hopefully you get the point...

I'm not entirely sure how I got interested in getting my kilt... I think it was some mixture of urging from a friend of the family and watching Braveheart for the first time. Either way, I looked into it and started getting more and more interested in pursuing it. At first, I got rather offended when someone called it a skirt and would insist on it being a kilt. Later I realized, hang on, skirts really can be rather manly, and aren't limited to women.

2) What styles of men's skirts do you prefer?
Knee to ankle length. I like long skirts for a few reasons, one is warmth, since I live in a very cold climate, and another is personal security. I just wouldn't feel comfortable wearing too short a skirt.

3) What do you think would be the best men's skirt to gain more public acceptance?
Kilts for sure. They're the most accepted as is. Beyond that, perhaps ethnic skirts?

4) The types of challenges you have faced?
For me, peers for the most part. I run into a number of people teasing me about wearing skirts. At which point I either shrug them off or educate them. As it is some of my close friends still hate it when I do, but hey, I'm not them. Also, my parents to some degree. They're supportive of non-conformity, and my dad even has his own kilt, though he very rarely wears it. But, my mom tends to think things are too "feminine" for me to wear, when in actuality they're really pretty plain.
