I've made a couple of kilts and I used straps and buckles
instead of Velcro. The 'concept' is the same

My suggestion regarding the Velcro is use a full section across the aprons
this instead of trying to mate two small sections together.
Velcro is not terribly expensive and the more there is of it the more powerful the holding pieces together.

I'm an absolute sucker for box pleats. I have made a box-pleated skirt in camouflage fabric that I have been meaning to put on pics & looks for some time. It's pleated all the way round, so isn't a kilt. It is one of my favourites, though.

All of the kilts in this thread look fabulous. Well done all.

No ...and no. I wear collarless tee shirts with thick pullovers in Winter.

I guess I still don't get the issue with box pleats, then.

Should be OK so long as your skirt is different enough from the local uniforms. I can see why it would be a bad idea to wear a skirt that looked like girls' uniform.

I had unfortunately chosen a black material and was part way through making it when they changed a local boys' school into an academy, admitted girls and designed a new uniform for them. The road outside my house was suddenly full of girls wearing new black box-pleat school uniforms, that wasn't a good time for me to experiment with a similar-looking box-pleated skirt.

Girls in private schools here all wear tartan kilts/skirts, but that did not stop me wearing mine; it rather encouraged me into wearing NON-tartan skirts.

Why didn't you make the inner of the box pleat in a contrasting material or make the inner of the box pleat black to contrast with the outer in a different colour, if you can understand that.

It was an option, many of them wear trousers. It is possible that the school rules allow boys to opt for skirts if they wish, but knowing the catchment area, I doubt if any who tried it would still be alive at the end of the first day.

I was going to try plain black first, to disguise any mistakes; then make a second one with contrasting pleats once I had got the basic design right.
