Recently I bought a sewing machine and ordered fabric to make a kilt. I found an elaborate description on the Internet to make a X-Kilt.
Is there anybody here who made the X-Kilt also? I'm afraid I will have some questions once I start constructing.

The X-Kilt has many similarities to my Dinkum Kilt.

I have downloaded the description of the X-kilt but as a Dutchy, a lot of the sewing terms are Greek to me. I have to translate those terms and do some research on the Internet to get the picture clear. As a preparation, I'm making a paper strip with all the markings for pleats and other parts. That made it already more clear.

I'm about at 2/3 of the road to a X-Kilt. I'm about to finish the tapering of the pleats. With reading and re-reading the text and with the fabric in front of me, most of it became clear.
Next will be the waist band. And here I think is a failure in the text or I miss a thing. A strip with a half of the Velcro is put to the inside of the over-apron. The waist band is supposed to go over the top of the fabric but then it will fall over the Velcro. Or the waist band is supposed to be attached higher than is indicated in the drawing or the Velcro should be attached to the inside of the waist band.

Can somebody shine a light?

Those pleats look really nice. Have you finished this project?

Over/Under Apron and Velcro.

The Over Apron should have 2 sections of Velcro.
One at each end of the apron's waistband. This
will be attached to the 'inner' side of the waistband

The Under Apron should have 2 sections of Velcro,
attached at similar locations on the 'outer' side of
the waistband. When the aprons cover each other,
the Velcro sections will meet and secure the waistband
to Each Other.

Just add a belt to tightly secure the kilt(so it doesn't
go 'south' on you ). Then add your sporran,
'fanny-pack' or belt-bag and you're off and running

I've made a couple of kilts and I used straps and buckles
instead of Velcro. The 'concept' is the same

I finished this kilt and I made three more kilts. I liked it making them and also wearing them.
I hope the winter will be over soon.

Outstanding results!

I was a little optimistic, I made two more kilts, not three.
The second one was from a lighter denim. With the camo kilt finished, I had more experience and more or less flew through the process. The closure is with Velcro inside and two snaps at the end of the front. The next one was from a darker denim. I made this one a little shorter and put a D-ring closure on. Two more pictures to go.

With three home-made and one factory-made I think I have enough.

With a sewing machine in the house I started to make skirts, but that is another story.

Nice looking kilt melsav. I do like box pleats. What material did you use?

Beachlion, your camo kilt is great too. A lot of care gone into it looking at the pics. How long did it take to make? Is it a heavy cotton I'm wondering ?

I'm always on the hunt for good material. I've made a min kilt from tweed, which was really successful, partly because you can buy tweed according to the weight so I knew more or less what to expect buying it online. But no idea when it comes to cotton or cotton mix etc. Any tips would be great.

Thanks Skirts Dad. I am not exactly sure what material it is, think it's a polycarbonate. I got it because it's light, and in the South African heat and humidity you need light materials. That Kilt was the first one I ever made and took me about 15 hours in total and another 3 or 4 hours to modify and make improvements. That particular Kilt I wear most of the time when out and have got a lot of compliment for mainly from the ladies.
