I'd admit this is classic slapstick and perfectly of its time. Did you know that Laurel and Hardy were actually Brits?
The thing is that the "humour" of a man in a dress has not evolved much in the better part of a century.
Check Mrs Brown's Boys, subtle it certainly is not:

Not my cup of tea either, but despite the embellishment of practically every sentence with four-letter words the series has found great favour in Britain and the cast have made a packet of money through it.
I certainly won't be buying any of the boxed sets of it on sale in hi-fi stores.
