Here's another pic.I came across. The price on the mag. cover gives the period away, but the pic. is interesting.

His kilt looks as if he forgot to take the basting stitches out of the pleats, and hers looks as if she's spilt her coffee!
I wonder what message the magazine was trying to convey.

If I remember correctly from my dissolute younger days, that magazine would feature the young lady inside minus her kilt - and everything else  Must admit, my eye was drawn to her rather than him.
The price shown is 3/6 (three shillings and sixpence) which dates it pre-1971 when the UK currency went decimal.

It was a windy day, pushing his pleats in onto his legs and denting the front apron on hers. I think the photographer could have chosen a location sheltered from the wind.
At that time 'Men Only' didn't feature the soft porn pics it got into later on...trying to compete with Playboy, no doubt.

Why?
Do you think there are more kilts on the streets of Scotland than elsewhere?
I'm not sure.
I have a feeling that for the average Scot the kilt is just another skirt and should not be worn by men -- except on Burns' night, of course!

In the end it will come down to mass desensitization. This line of thought fits with the subtle art of desencitization.

Maybe not if someone is merely passing by in the street. But surely if someone looks at you for more than a moment they will see the skirt. Perhaps then they think "Hey I didn't notice that at first. It actually doesn't look odd and it's OK on a man." and you have done your bit for the cause. But maybe this is just my wishful thinking!
SkirtRevolution wrote:I have been thinking about this recently and believe that one of the best ways to promoted skirted garments is for us men to promote kilts. I have heard so many women not only say that kilts are sexy and hot, but wish that ALL men would wear them more often as every day wear. This I believe is a huge advantage to us. I also believe that more men would take to wearing kilts knowing the response of women and feeling comfortable that it is a men garment. I really believe that the road to making skirts popular for men is to FIRST make kilts popular again for men. The kilt suffers none of the taboos that a skirt does; in fact it’s the opposite. There is also no or little effort in styling with a kilt as a kilt goes with just about everything.

I don't follow how that helps to get people thinking that skirts are OK for men. If a kilt is seen as being in a special category of its own, neither trousers not skirt, and is accepted as menswear, how can wearing a kilt get people thinking that a skirt is menswear too? Not trying to pick holes in your argument, kilt-wearing certainly can't do any harm, but just reflecting on the position here in Scotland!

If you're talking about traditional tartan kilts, then what you say is probably true.

But I think utility/modern kilts occupy more of a middle point between women's skirts and men's pants, because they combine elements from each.

So if utility kilts become more common and accepted, we're halfway home in getting skirts of all types accepted.

Traditional kilts may be seen as legitimate menswear, so perhaps some of that legitimacy has been extended to nontraditional kilts. (That is, garments that were inspired by traditional kilts). That doesn't necessarily mean that other garments will be regarded as legitimate.

True, not necessarily, but perhaps one step at a time.

Or perhaps just take whatever you can get.

"The Kilt" is a separate garment.
Sure it's a skirt in the sense that it's one tube but tell that to some wearers, you'd be lucky to escape with complete dentistry.
The Utilikilt and others are broadly accepted because they follow the same basic pattern.
Oddly, I have found that my "nukilt" has never been questioned as being anything other than a kilt which I find surprising. Especially when I wear it without a sporran and teamed with tights.
Maybe, just maybe, the non-traditional kilt designs have made this possible, no idea really. As for legitimacy, no, lack of reaction does not make it so.
At the moment, I'm not really caring about a bigger picture just happy to be doing my skirted thing as and when I choose.
Steve.
