Re: Taiwan university 'breaks gender frame' with 'Men's Skir
I like the idea, and I really liked the skirts those students were wearing, but I don't completely like the idea (insinuated perhaps?) that you have to be part of the LGBT community to be a man who wears skirts/kilts. Nothing against LGBT, it's just I'm against thinking "straight" men wouldn't touch a skirt...to wear it at least. But I suppose this debate has been beaten to death on these forums?
Re: Taiwan university 'breaks gender frame' with 'Men's Skir
I think it comes from the notion that if you wear a skirt, you must be gay.

I'm not so sure. They want to "break the traditional gender frame" - isn't that what we all do? The article reads as if supporting transsexuals etc is merely a by-product of making the skirt a unisex item of clothing.
Keep on skirting,

I think this could have a really positive impact. The young tend to be more open to new ideas, so many of these students may be willing to give it a go. And having discovered the advantages and comfort of skirt wearing, some may well continue to to wear one sometimes.
There's also the potential positive publicity that could come from their blogs, tweets, etc. Would be good to see something similar tried in other countries.
Donald.

I think the objective was to support gender overlap, whether by LGBT classification or simple fashion overlap.

If there is any connexion between gayness (gaiety?) and skirt wearing, it must be that both take a lot of courage when going public. Heteros and closet homos that toe the line of conformity have not the strength of character needed to step outside the bifurcated box.

Re: Taiwan university 'breaks gender frame' with 'Men's Skir
We have had this debate/discussion numerous times here. I will reiterate what I have always said, which is that the social conservatives don't differentiate between straight or gay or TG men when it comes to skirts. To them, man in skirt = queer. We have nothing to lose by embracing causes beyond our own fairly narrow interest. And it is the right thing to do.
As a matter of fact, the sun DOES shine out of my ...

Dillon,
Well said, we are one minority amongst many.
As a group, we should be able to embrace and value diversity in all it's richness.
Steve.

Dlln/Stv, hmph, can you tell that bit about embracing and valuing diversity in all its richness to MOH? Technically, in business it's a legal requirement, but in practice ....
I believe in offering every assistance short of actual help but then mainly just want to be left to be myself in all my difference and uniqueness.
Re: Taiwan university 'breaks gender frame' with 'Men's Skir
There's certainly a school of thought that all people fall into one of two categories: straight, kind, heterosexual parents and perverts. In this mindset, gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transvestites, transsexuals, child molesters, necromancers, beastialitists, porn viewers, and who knows who else are all the same: perverts.
Of course, they are wrong. Human sexuality has many, many dimensions, and each one is independent of the others.

I beg to differ. That's what the liberal's stereotype of social conservatives is. I'm personally extremely conservative. More to the right than either GWB, McCain, or Romney. Yet, I differentiate between straight, gay, TG, TS, etc, when it comes to skirts, dresses, etc. Most of the people who I've come across have been the same way. I've had more problems with the left not accepting the fact that a guy wearing a skirt doesn't necessarily mean he's gay. So, it goes both ways.dillon wrote:We have had this debate/discussion numerous times here. I think that's part of the reason why I'm longhaired and wear skirted clothing. I like being hard to stereotype. It's fun watching people's heads explode when they can't fit me into a box.Caultron wrote: Agreed, all generalities are false.
