Hobble skirt story
My grandmother once told me a story which she had heard when the 'hobble skirt' first became fashionable. At that time, Bath had a tram (streetcar) network, two of the vehicles were later additions to the fleet and had higher steps than the others. A girl in a hobble skirt was waiting at the head of a queue at the tram stop when one of the 'high steppers' arrived.
She tried to get aboard the tram, but couldn't lift her leg high enough because of her tight skirt, so she reached behind and undid a button. The rest of the queue waited patiently while she tried to board again - still without success - so she reached behind and undid a second button. At that point pair of strong hands gripped her gently around the waist and lifted her onto the tram platform. She turned around and said: "Thank you sir you're a real gentleman", to which the man behind her replied: "Not at all miss, it was my buttons you were undoing".

There is no such thing as a normal person, only someone you don't know very well yet.
