School Dresses as Part of Boys' School Uniform

Post by ashtree »

Dear all,
Do you know this interesting fact, that in early-mid 20th century school dresses were a part of boys' school uniform in some countries (Belgium, France, Turkey, even my country- Bulgaria till 50's-60's)
I found some old school photos of my father, where he is 10 years old- 3rd grade pupil (1953). Both boys and girls were dressed in black satin dresses, buttonned at the back like nurse's dresses and in long white socks. I asked him about, and he told me, that these were the school uniforms for 1st-5th grade pupils in Bulgarian schools that time- - called "uchenicheska prestilka" in Bulgarian, or "school smock (pinafore)" , if translated into English. He also told me, that these smocks/dresses were very comfortable in hot weather.
Once I saw an old French movie on TV, where schoolboys were dressed in the same uniform.
It there anyone of older generation from France or Belgium here, who remembers these uniforms?
Best

Interesting... Sounds like something that should be added to the Boy's Historical Clothing site that has been linked to before. Just wish that it had continued on at least through the '80s and had been done in the United States as well. Then, I might've had a chance to have been dressed in that manner. Oh well.

Yep. Was dressed like that in the 60s, while in Europe, as a grade school uniform. Were called smocks, but I thought they looked like dresses, as they were longer than the shorts worn underneath. Worn year around, too.

Wish that these school smocks had survived in Bulgaria in 70's-80's, when I was in grade school...In fact, girls wore them, but they were buttonned at the front and made of blue, non-shiny material. Nowadays uniforms are not required in Bulgarian schools.

Hi, all
Does anybody know login and password for
http://www.histclo.com
or a place, where to find it?
Boys' Historical Clothing Site, mentioned above by Kilted John?
When you enter the site, your browser opens a login window and requires login and password to show pictures , as it is with some adult content sites. Sounds strange - a historical site requiring special registration...
