A kid recently caused a stir in Virginia for wearing a dress to school. Looks like a possible fashion freedom case, and the administrators are not being too negative about it (although they are concerned). There will be on-going discussions in the school system over the issue. The Cafe could possibly play a positive role in this case. The original newspaper article:

There's a video segment about him, which is informative on the situation:

The kid (Kaiser) and his friend set up a website to discuss the issue as well. Constructive suggestions and dialog at this point could really help turn things in a postivie way: http://www.freekaiser.co.nr/

If you wish to write directly to the school superintendent, his email is found at: http://gets.gc.k12.va.us/directory/super.htm. Please make sure you are polite, helpful and non-confrontational. Validate his concerns.

I wrote the superintendant of the school, and I don't really believe there's a real cause for concern as I didn't really put anything in the email about it.

I think the board is getting a bit too presumptive over the situation and that taking a valium might be in order.

I can also only be so polite to these so called "administratours" as most of them are in the job because they couldn't handle corporate life, and what it takes to be in it.

I was polite, helpful and non-confrontational, and I validated his concerns. I also gave him a bit of men/skirt like garments history, just in case he didn't want to research it. Also mentioned the several other recent similar instances of school boys wearing kilts, skirts, uniform skirts and other unbifurcated garments and how all of them turned out with positive results. I hope he thinks it over some more and backs himself carefully out of the negative spotlight he's put himself in before the national media picks it up. I didn't mention that to him as I believe him to be an intelligent person that will probably figure that out for himself. :)
I had to remove this signature as it was being used on Twitter. This is my OPINION, you NEEDN'T AGREE.

Black sequins seems a tad dressed up for school, the choice sounds intended to be goading. At the same time I don't think a girl in top hat and tails would have been sent home to change. Good for Kaiser for getting people talking about the issue.

Two things:

1. These are teenagers, they won't always do the most APPROPRIATE thing, and yes, teenagers do sometimes like to goad.

2. Wearing a skirt is nothing so big for teenage girls, and they've had years of practice at wearing appropriate skirts. For this kid, he was much more of a beginner, hence more likely to wear something inappropriate.
