Wearing a Skirt to Church

Old Salt.... I am replying to you regarding the jacket for a Male Skirt Suit under separate cover so the
design of the jacket and the skirt do not get confused.

With my experience of wearing four different pencil skirts , my conclusions are to wear a pencil skirt with the hem below the knee......If I get the skirt cut correctly , the longer skirt would make me look taller.

Starting with the chosen style of my male pencil skirt,
I will then choose a style for my male skirt suit jacket......
I currently have three jacket styles in my wardrobe......
A long jacket which is part of an old female skirt suit outfit....
....a traditional male sports jacket or male suit jacket.... or a shorter style male Kilt Jacket.....

I am very choosey regarding the style of my smart best clothes.....
I may choose either a male or female style of suit jacket.... for my male skirt suit outfit
The whole concept is to wear a smart male skirt suit as the escort to a lady in her female skirt suit
during our visit to church on sunday.

Collar and tie will be order of the day. ...
I will be wearing my size 5 1/2 or U.K. 39 black school boy shoes
and will be joining the black stocking brigade with my neat black stockings and suspender belt.

I must say that this thread has not done anything to think things will change.

For some there may not have been much to eat but by God they were well turned out.

Weeladdie You have 2 major plusses the first is supportive family members . Without them this entire discussion would not be possible. Have they expressed any opinions.


The second is having a tailor or someone to help with your ideas.


In the past few years after my introduction to skirts I have spent soooo much on my new wardrobe that I am going to stick with off the shelf for a while .

I go to church twice a week on Sunday and a weekday mass. For the weekday mass I am usually in a skirt. I havent worked up enough nerve to go to a crowded Sunday mass yet .

The outfit below is my planned attire for that first time

That is a good comment.....I am exploring the issues regarding the formal wearing of a Male Skirt Suit,
rather than crossing the isle and buying a modern style off the peg skirt suit made in standard female
sizing.....I am slim, 5' 3" ...What I would call Petite Size.. in the U K.
I have been into the Falmouth Marks and Spenser Branch....They hold no Pencil Skirts or Skirt Suits.
My thoughts are that if a style of garment is not worn on the local streets..it is not held in the local stores. My next move will be to go and see the ladies I know in the Penzance up market ladies and
Gentlemens outfitters ..They may have some good Ideas regarding a way forward....The Company
has chain of shops in a hundred mile range.....two of my problems are incorrect garment sizes
and the poor management of the white van delivery system

House of Fraser have problems with their Departmental Store Chain ....When I was looking for a
pencil skirt one of their assistants measured me up and went out the back and found a nice garment.

The High Street fashion chains are having problems with rent and rates and cash flow.

I am at present definitely interested in the concept of a male skirt rather than a female skirt suit.

Thanks for the post and photo Old Salt....Perhaps a V neck black sheath dress with a white shirt,
collar and tie , might be a start for my sunday outfit..I am in a rush at the moment but will

Oh yes we had to be extra clean and have on the best clothes we owned to go to church, my mother would see to that every Sunday. The last church I went to was easy going as far as clothing was concerned. You could wear anything that would cover the "bad parts" and it was OK. They wanted your money and figured if you spent lots of money on clothes you would not have any to give to the church.

if the Parson would keep the peasants simple , then the Squire could keep the peasants poor........

At a later period in history the young ladies of the village took their one and only annual bath in April.
If the young lady got married in the village church in May, she did not smell too bad if she carried a
bunch of sweet smelling flowers and the insense burner was vigously swung in the isle.

For whatever reason, the department stores have gone to suiting separates (jackets and matching skirts) rather than skirted suits per se. If you decide to buy off the rack, you might look into that.

All of you can say what you like about organized religion, because it helps me develop my relationship with God and, since at least the founding of the US, the churches have been at the vanguard of social reform, I'm still a practitioner. Has it had its shortcomings? Does it still? Will it probably always? Absolutely! It's a human institution. But when it comes to keeping humanity humane, it's kind of like Churchill's rumination on democracy, "Democracy is a terrible form of government. In fact, it's the worst; except for all the others."

Old Salt... I found my Black , Below the Knee , Sheath Dress with a Vee neck
....successfully worn today with a
white shirt , collar and tie...tweed sports jacket and my flat soled knee high black boots.

I was informed by one of my female friends that I looked very smart today.....
I feel this comment is good female judgement and I will be wearing my black dress outfit to church,
attending the ceremony alone , to test the response of the Congregation.
My personal thoughts are that the outfit is warm and comfortable.....I passed a group of teenage
school children in my travels , they did not even notice me....
This day's response is what I would expect for a sunday best church dress outfit.
These comments should be considered in conjunction with my opinion that I have been taught
how to behave as a gentleman in mixed company what ever garments I am wearing...weeladdie.

It is interesting to note that the plain black shift dress I have chosen to wear to church is similar
to the style of garment I was considering wearing in the tunics and robes thread .

I tried spending Half an Hour in Marks and Spencer today to check the pencil skirt suit idea again in the
largest store of the chain in the local city.....the black skirt did not match the colour of the jacket.
The black skirt sizing was comfortable as it was slightly larger than a 12 in other brands.
So I had a skirt but no jacket,,,,,,,,the jacket was not a good fit.....The staff assured me they
did not have any skirt suits in the store......then I found a rack of skirt suits in blue....
the skirts were in ....regular size....and in ....long size.....the sizing for this style of range of skirts
was different to the black skirt in the same store....None of the skirts fitted my waist and hips.....
none of the sizes of the jackets fitted me on the
male shoulders and the male waist to give a good jacket fit...........
My new black skirt is a different style as the vent is in the rear of the garment
and the zip opening is in the front , .....a female style of fly zip.

Did you know that a pencil skirt tapers inwards from the hip to the hem ?
A straight skirt is parallel from hip to hem.
My below the knee hem is called a ....normal size.....
A calf length parallel skirt is called a.....long size......

By this time I was wearing my new black skirt.....Four of the young lady assistantants were wearing
their black uniform skirts . I considered they all looked very smart.
A lady from the Green Isle showed me some new slippers....Each slipper had a pair of cats' eyes on
the toe....I was wearing these slippers with my new skirt, and trying the slippers for size......

" What do you think ? " she asked.

" Those cats are trying to look up my skirt. " , I replied. ........weeladdie

I recently made a skirt that was straight from the hips down to the hem. I made side splits of 4" (10 cm) for ease of movements. Even with the splits, it is getting a little tight getting in or out of a car. I need some concentration.

I plan to make a second skirt along those lines. I will taper it slightly down- and inwards and make a box pleat in the back.

Those skirts are not for going to the church. I'm a atheïst.
