I was wondering.. because of the skirt....

Post by Regular Guy »

We live in a retirement community where golf carts are a secondary means of transport around the village. I also have a neighbor who often plays the bagpipes and can be heard almost a block away when he is practicing.

I am almost always in one of my kilts around the house and on occasion I will wear one while walking the dog in a different area about a mile from our house. And, on several instances have met other walkers who have always had positive things to say about my kilt.

Well yesterday I had the dog out in the front yard to do business and I was of course clad in my kilt. I see a golf cart racing up the street and When the lady got in front of our house she stopped and asked if I was the guy who played the bagpipes. I told her No that he lived around the corner. She commented on how much she liked hearing him play. Then as she started to drive on she said “i was just wondering, you know, because of the skirt”. Of course she meant kilt. But, I found it curious that she perceived me in a skirt. Perhaps that is really what folks think even when wearing a kilt.

I think this makes 2 points . The first is that people notice . The second and more important is that it is ok for you to wear your kilts/skirts all of the time.

That is an interesting story. The skirt/kilt was quite incidental although stereotyped.

I feel that when someone asks about bagpipes or calls a kilt a skirt they're accepting you and trying to integrate what they see into their existing world view. So if they need a little help sorting things out, I'm happy to oblige.
Courage, conviction, nerve, verve, dash, panache, guts, nuts, balls, gall, élan, stones, whatever. Get some and get skirted.
