I agree with you CR. I remember when I was scared to wear pantyhose openly with shorts. That was 20 something years ago, been wearing openly ever since. Same thing with skirts. I've had 99% positive experiences wearing a skirt. The 1%? Hell I'd have that wearing a t-shirt someone doesn't like. I think some guys take the negative reactions and blow them up way bigger than the positive ones so they can reinforce that what they are doing is wrong. What I mean to say is that the world accepts men wearing skirts. We just have to accept it in our own heads. Once that happens, it's very easy.

I think that rounds it up; the negatives are a small minority and when we realise that, it is easy.

Yes, exactly.
Courage, conviction, nerve, verve, dash, panache, guts, nuts, balls, gall, élan, stones, whatever. Get some and get skirted.

I wore a rather femme ensemble to work last Friday - nylons, heels, skirt - thinking that my day would consist of sitting quietly in my office marking papers. So of course first thing in the morning I meet a mother escorting her wide-eyed prospective first-year student to visit Uni.

I chuckled and mentioned it to Natasha in my office. Her unfeigned reaction was "So what? Why should anybody care what you wear?"

An update from the Netherlands, last Saturday, a fairly busy one because it was market day, I was out shopping in town. I was wearing a denim skirts with hiking boots underneath. No comments whatsoever. I did not bother to look over my shoulders to see if anyone was staring because I was wearing my outfit with confidence.

Similar thing today. Got changed after work, cycled into town, did my grocery shopping. No issues whatsoever.

Obviously time to do it more often!

Hi Martin,
I had the very great pleasure of spending some time with my old German Shanty-choir aboard a sailing barge on the Ijsselmeer and Markenmeer last September. Ashore we enjoyed the considerable civilized ambience of places like Hoorn and Enkhuizen where most people just cycled about on decent strong proper bikes.

We need photographic evidence of your shopping trips skirted aboard your bike, of course. :!: I see you are nearer Rheine than Amsterdam so villeicht sprichst Du ein Paar Deutsche Worte?

Like most Saturdays, today was errands day. Like most ... well, now all of my waking hours, I wore a skirted garment, my chambray shirtdress to be precise. Among my errands were what I consider to be very masculine environments, an auto repair shop and a barbershop.

At the auto repair shop, they were not only professional, they were downright solicitous. I have gone there before with my previous vehicle, a Ford Explorer, but, this was Ginger's, my new 2015 Mazda Miata's, first visit. It went just fine. No mention, or even particularly noticeable looks from any of the staff or other customers.

At The Barbers, that's the business's name, almost all of the staff are were women and, unless you make an appointment, it's luck of the draw who you get. My barber today was a young woman I don't remember getting before, but she remembered the length I prefer, was very personable and when I showed her the evening gown I plan to wear to a fund-raising auction, she very enthusiastically supported my choice.

Later at the supermarket, a woman called out to me by name. I looked at her completely blankly because I didn't recognize her. She then reminded me of the connection, she too is a barber at The Barbers, but I'm quite sure she has never cut my hair. As the manager at one of the resale shops I frequent put it, I'm "memorable." I mean how many male customers do any of these places have who can rock skirts and dresses!

Social norms aren't changed by Congress or Parliament; they're changed by a sufficient number of people ignoring the existing ones and publicly practicing new ones.

I find that same thing people don't care what you are wearing as long as you are dressed decently. When I brought my car in for an oil change ,linda my sales lady came up to me and said nice skirt. And over the winter when I went for a hair cut wearing jeans my barber asked me why I wasn't wearing a skirt. Even at the post office as I was leaving I heard one of the customers say to the clerk "did you see He was wearing a skirt. And I heard the clerk say so what he is always in here in a skirt.

They don't care.

Actually, some may care -- and in a good way. A common theme that emerges from this thread is that we are remembered more often by others after we began wearing skirts than from before. This usually indicates positivity -- and I've not picked up on any mention of sustained negativity on the part of the general populace around, save for the seemingly-universal problem with those closest to us.

Being remembered in a friendly way also forces us to "up our game" a bit and challenges us to be more outgoing and affable, which can only be good, and that perpetuates the cycle. It's interesting that a simple piece of clothing can put all that machinery in motion.

Its true they do remember you for wearing a skirt. Fortunately I have heard only positive comments. When I have been some place like the bank or the post office and a person makes a comment to the clerk who has seen me before their response to them have always been a positive comment

Well over the last few days I headed from my hoose in Scotland down to Milton Keynes for my Brothers wedding. Skirted for the journey down to close to Milton Keynes, got changed back into a two legged denim skirt, what are they called? I think they were Jeans! just in case any of the crowd didn't like the idea of a big fat man wearing a skirt. For the reception the kilt got a good wearing, and predictably went down very well. Worn informally with a ghillie shirt.
Back into the Midas cargo skirt for the journey home. As always, loads of comments and complements about the kilt, not a word about the skirt.

Yes, and I've never had anyone remember me for my pants.

Here's a twist for you . I always wear my Vietnam veterans baseball cap. It seems that lately veterans are getting the respect that some of us didn't get when we first came home. I get a lot of smiles and friendly nods which I greatly appreciate. The funniest thing is when someone starts to say the normal "thank you for your service" and about half way thru they notice the skirt and start to stutter :salut:
