Yesterday, I had to go to the Everett, WA Municipal Court for a mitigation hearing. Since I had no jeans and I didn't want to wear a kilt, in that I was going as a starving student, I wore a pair of shorts, with gray wool kneesocks, running shoes and an orange t-shirt, plus my parka. As I was waiting in the line, I realized that one of my pockets had a hole in it that went into the lining of the shorts. So, to avert an uncomfortable situation where I'd be wanded all over my shorts, I went back out to the car and slid the shorts off, exposing the black pleated skirt that I had on underneath (find that helps keep me warmer in colder weather). Went back in, did the x-ray machine thing, then went into the courtroom for the hearing. No comments, no chuckles, nothing. No one cared. Not even the judge, who happened to see me the whole time, since I got stuck sitting in the aisle at the back, in a chair. Got a deferred prosecution, so as long as I don't do anything stupid while driving for the next 6 months, I remain clean.

We did not manage to see my mother over the festive season so on Sunday we took her out for lunch in a local pub as a sort of late Christmas.

I was wearing my Tan Utilikilt with a dark red button down shirt, long black socks (allowed / encouraged to fall down to my ankles) and black suede shoes. No one even seemed to notice how I was dressed when we arrived and were shown through the pub to the far end of the restaurant area. However, when we left, several hours later and a fair few pounds heavier, the pub was almost empty apart from a group of four older folks at one table and I heard a rahter startled "stage whisper" of "He's wearing a kilt" and the response "Well it is nearly Burns night."

Since I was halfway out of the room I did not return or engage them in conversation, however it did leave me wondering whether anyone here had attended a Burns night celebration in full regalia this year?

Well last weekend a dozen of us gathered for a slightly tardy celebration of Burns Nicht. We did it all - the piping in of the haggis, the address to the haggis and not forgetting the toasting of the lassies.

I had a Black Watch tartan kilt on for the occasion. A great time was had by all.

The BBC (as re-broadcast in the USA via NPR [0]) had a recitation of the "Address the a Haggis", and I could just make out the words (being on the road at the time, I, however, had more important things to worry about). A nice little piece.

As far as "piping in the haggis" goes, all I could think of really quickly was a parallel of piping in music (originally done with tubes -- kinda like the Intarnet -- think ships' speaking tubes) or other forms of liquid or gas transport (or viscous solids, I suppose, in which class haggis might count. [OK, that last bit was tongue-in-cheek; I hope that my mother's admonition about crossing my eyes -- they'll stick that way! -- doesn't hold for keeping one's tongue firmly in cheek.]

[0] National Public Radio. It's somewhat comparable to the BBC, but we Yanks don't pay a license tax for receivers so NPR has to get by with the occasional government grant and donations from listeners.

I heard a fellow on the local radio playing a homemade set of bagpipes==they were made from a rubber glove and sounded surprisingly good! More in the mode of uillean pipes so okay for piping in an Irish stew
To get back on track, i went to the Eumundi market today, wearing royal blue wrap pants (you'd hardly call them trousers) topped with my "Bob the bonger" Can we smoke it? Yes we can! T shirt and sandals on my feet with a shoulder bag for the usual paraphenalia.

Did some skirted junkyarding both today and a couple days ago. Wore what I normally would wear into the yard (car t-shirt, old fleece jacket, long sox under rubber wellies), but swapped the shorts out for one of the denim skirts that I've been wearing for biking. Haven't had any comments in the yard with respect to my attire, but did overhear a comment while I was @ the bank ("that's a dude in a dress") before going over to the yard. Sounded more like surprise, than someone making fun. But, didn't really care that much, either way. Afterward, slipped out of the car clothes and slid off the denim, exposing the black pleated skirt that I've usually been wearing. Threw on my hiking boots, then got some lunch, hitting up the local photo gear shop on the way home.

I went to a party and then back through London on the tubes last week wearing a plain black kilt. Nobody said or did anything. Certainly a confidence booster.

Wore a green knee-length skirt to school yesterday. No comments of course, including meeting with two students to discuss their directed-study project, and three hours in class getting some refresher training in FORTRAN. No comments from chance meetings with the Chairman or the Dean in the hallways, etc.

Frankly, it was such a non-event that I wasn't even going to mention it until I remembered how much the new guys need to hear that! <smile>

I was kilted travelling yesterday morning, taking a short walk out and spending the night in a large hotel last night. It is not an issue at all, indeed it may brighten some peoples day. I will travel home kilted tomorrow too.

People don't see blokes in skirts that often; come to think of it we don't see women in skirts that often either.

Well, if it's non-events you're looking for: I went to the barbershop weekend before last in my long green tiered skirt w/ 50's petticoat. No comments .

Walked to the post office last weekend in the same outfit, a little girl (6 yrs?) asked her mother, "why is that man wearing a skirt," but they didn't say anything to me.

Took my car to get the oil changed this morning, wearing black tights & body suit and my purple hiking skirt, and then went grocery shopping and walked home. Again, no comments.

You'd think I was wearing jeans, for all the reaction I get.
