Out and About -- In the World at Large
Re: Out and About -- In the World at Large
What I wore on an outing yesterday as I was eager to wear a new printed skirt (that's lined) from Sears. The block heeled sandals from Payless I thought were a nice touch. While at a computer store to buy a new keyboard wrist rest, the cashier, a petite Latina said to me that my skirt was pretty. And I couldn't disagree.

Curious, do you tuck your top into the skirt or let the shirt hang over? It's hard to tell from the photo. Also good to see I'm not the only one who wears skirts a little high on the waist.JeffB1959 wrote:What I wore on an outing yesterday as I was eager to wear a new printed skirt (that's lined) from Sears. When it comes to tucking tops into skirts, I'd say it depends on the style of top, the skirt I pair it with and, frankly speaking, what my mood might be at the time. Tanks like in the picture I just posted I've worn tucked and untucked, with floor sweepers, untucked looks nicer. However, with t-shirts and blouses I usually tuck those in as that presents a neater image. I don't think there's any hard and fast rules when it comes to tucking tops, I find that experimentation with both methods is key to finding what works best for you, and you alone. And yeah, I like my skirts high on my waist, always have.moonshadow wrote:Curious, do you tuck your top into the skirt or let the shirt hang over? It's hard to tell from the photo. You can also do a hybrid in that you tuck the top into the skirt but then withdraw an inch or two so that the top hangs a bit over the top of the skirt. It works best on very thin materials as they drape more easily. Sophisticated wot.
I believe in offering every assistance short of actual help but then mainly just want to be left to be myself in all my difference and uniqueness.

There seemed to be far more men in kilts at Chippenham this year.Charlie wrote:.... Its the Chippenham Folk Festival in a couple of weeks, so if you're there, the guy in the colourful skirt will probably be me![]()

At the start of the festival, Charlie was the only guy in a colourful skirt, but by the end he had convinced me to buy one too. At first I found a fabulous black skirt with a vibrant glowing coloured pattern in one of the charity shops, but unfortunately it was a couple of inches too small around the waist. Eventually I bought a cheap blue/green patterned Indian cotton skirt from one of the market stalls and wore it to the final ceilidh. At least eight people went out of their way to compliment me on it - and two of them were men!

Re: Out and About -- In the World at Large
Mrs C and I spent the weekend at the Chippenham Folk Festival where we would have contradanced our socks off if we'd been wearing socks. This was great fun, but for me the icing on the cake was to pack four colourful skirts and wear a different one each day, Friday to Monday.
Lots of comments from the ladies about my skirts - all positive:
o 'I like your skirt'
o 'Skirts are much nicer to dance in'
o 'Why don't more men wear skirts?'
o 'Our skirts are trailing each other' (during a swing)
o 'We're all wearing skirts!' (in a minor set with three ladies)
o 'A short skirt is cooler that a long one' (I was wearing an ankle-lenght skirt, and replied that any skirt was better than trousers)
A male friend said that, after seeing so many men in shorts with their pale hairy legs, he thought I looked better in a skirt - praise indeed
Someone told me I attracted lots of looks, but I didn't hear any negative comments, wolf-whistles or laughs, and Mrs C and I walked around hand-in-hand, both wearing skirts. It also seemed to attract the ladies - many requests from them to dance - how could I turn them down?
At one venue, Pelmut came bounding across the floor clad in a colourful skirt, pleased as punch, then disappeared again to do a festival-related job.
The picture shows me in the purple skirt that I dance in. It started life with little clumps of sequins which I debated about removing. However it has shed most of them on various dance floors. The slogan on the tee shirt reads 'Dancing is the Vertical Expression of a horizontal desire legalised by music'. Vertical Expression is an excellent contradance band.

Great that you had a lot of positive comments from the ladies. Shame the men didn't pipe up as much.

While in France, I used the tram one or twice. Last time, a team of inspectors got on, and I dutifully showed my ticket. "That's all right," one said, and, from then to the end of my journey, they did not check any other tickets; we all stood chatting about the comfort and style of my kilt with quite positive comments -- looks good, makes more sense for men than tight jeans, etc. All very friendly.
Back in Spain, I went to an Italian restaurant last night, and the owner told me how elegant I was, I stood out from the crowd, and so on. After downing our pizzas, we got a free drink !
OK, no different from what others here have reported, but it is very rare for me to get any comments at all.

Re: Out and About -- In the World at Large
I'm really beginning to wonder if I'm blending into the scenery, even when I'm in a dress. No one seems to give much notice as to what I'm wearing. Today was reportedly the hottest day of the year so far (92 deg F with about 45-50% humidity), so I did a quick trip to the bank ATM in town while wearing that orange/blue/white floral-print dress I have. No one gawked or even seemed to pay much attention at all.
For that matter, at least part of my family isn't complaining when I don said item while it's hot out. My mother seems mildly ok with it.

Did they ever? Or was it just our overreacting and paranoia?Kilted_John wrote:I'm really beginning to wonder if I'm blending into the scenery, even when I'm in a dress. With respect to the general public, after our doing it a while, I think they get used to it. Family, I know that a couple family members would have a conniption if they'd seen me the past 30 hours or so.moonshadow wrote:

"Is that a skirt you'm wearin?"
"Ee do look a lot better'n some o' the wimmen..."

Went to Ikea today, wearing a gray maxi skirt with gray polo shirt and dark blue fleece, no comments and no looks, uneventful, and did found what I wanted.

Re: Out and About -- In the World at Large
I haven't posted here for a while, but went to see a film with my wife last week called "Eye In The Sky" with Helen Mirren and Alan Rickman (his final film). It was excellent, and very challenging to ones sense of right and wrong. I strongly urge everyone to see it if you can. I wore my black Yoga Travel Skort from Betabrand. This week we plan to see "Miles Ahead" with Don Cheadle. I have a new ruched/gathered black mini I plan to wear.
As a matter of fact, the sun DOES shine out of my ...
