Re: Posh English school allows skirts for boys

Unfortunately, as usual, the article confuses clothing choices with gender identity: You are correct that gender identity is a separate issue, but paradoxically, it is a linked issue. According to the [US] National Institute of Medicine and American Psychological Association, "Gender Nonconfor...

Re: Out and About -- In the World at Large

Went down to the doctor's surgery today for a shingles vaccination. It was a nice hot day so I wore a denim miniskirt (4" above the knee - longer than some shorts I've seen this week) and a polo shirt, not tucked into the waistband. Had a few minutes to wait, and chatted to a guy I used to work...

Re: The worm has turned

Yeah, well, Carl, I didn't come across minicomputers until 1985 when I started University and met the VAX11/780 running UNIX. That takes me back. We had a computer room at work with a VAX11/780, plus washing-machine size disk drives. The skirt link is that the room had a void under the floor for th...

Re: Out and About -- In the World at Large

I saw a dog wearing trousers this morning (all four legs). I suppose the human equivalent would be long-johns. Yet to see a dog in a skirt though :(
I was in a denim kilt :D

Re: The Issue of Gender and Clothing

... I feel that's it's vital to question why men have to be so annoyingly limited when it comes to what they can wear while women have no limits whatsoever, something I find to be glaringly unfair. Maybe my thinking is muddled here, but to me this is a form of inequality. We hear an awful lot about...

Re: Burns Night Haggis and that etc.

I've heard that Haggis have their legs on one side longer than the other so that they can walk along hill sides without rolling off. OK for circular hills, they eventually get back to where they started. I suppose left-handed haggis go the other way :?

Re: Burns Night Haggis and that etc.

I walked into town today, wearing a black Union kilt, forgetting it was Burn's night. A woman said "Happy birthday", which I thought odd as I'd never seen her before. I realised afterwards that she'd actually said "Happy Burn's day". Wonder what she thought of my less than positi...

A man actually said that to me once. I replied "this one does" and kept walking. On reflection, asking 'why' would have been a better response; at least it would have made him think.

Re: Interesting discussion of men in skirts in the workplace

Discussion included the comment, "men in our culture don't wear skirts." I pointed out that only in my lifetime has it become the norm for woment to wear trousers... In our culture it used to be that women only wore skirts, but they changed the culture - so why shouldn't men do the same? ...

Re: What Is the Lure of Skirts?

The lure of skirts? Originally, for me, it was the 'forbidden fruits' thing - skirts are what women wore and shame on you for even thinking about wanting to try one on, let alone being seen wearing one in public
Like Stu, its now a mixture of comfort and rebellion.

Alumi num ? When I was at school in the 1960s, our chemistry teacher started talking about aloominum. We all thought it was some sort of new metal as we'd never heard of it ... until he realised what he was saying and explained he meant alumin ium . He was English but had been teaching in the USA be...

All please note that I am going with my family to Egypt on Monday on holiday and I'm not taking anything that would give me access to the internot so if you don't hear from me don't worry. I am taking my sarongs which MOH has accepted as my normal daily holiday wear. I am also taking mainly vests a...

Re: Couple Withdraw Their Son From School

Sort of related to this thread. There was a short item on the local TV news last Friday about a primary school in Bristol which had just won some sort of equality award. The school provides unisex toilets and teaches that parents don't necessarily have to be male & female (I'm oversimplifying th...
