Re: Sightings "in the wild"
Today, 12th May, at about 1330hrs, in Norwich (UK), heading up Elm Hill, a tall slender man (mid- to late 40s/early 50s?), shoulder-length curly dark hair, in a soft-looking pink dress (I think that the colour is "old rose") and with a white cardigan around his shoulders. He looked very co...

Re: Sightings "in the wild"
Today (27th April, Sunday) at about 0955hrs, in the street outside the Beccles Quakers' Meeting House (Suffolk), a man whom I took at first to be Stevie away from his usual part of the UK (same approximate age, same hair style and colour, same beard, same kinds of clothing - fleece top, long red ski...

Re: Musings about our changing times and how I anticipate it may effect me (us)
As a member of this community based outside of the USA, and having read some of the observations (from Carl and Moon in particular) about working life in the USA, I found the information in https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2025/02/the-surveillance-tech-waiting-for-workers-as-they-retur...

Re: New Technologies
1974 is roughly the same time I had my first computer experiences. I was a bit more lucky, thanks to various family members who encouraged "the little one" when I was still in my single-digits of age, and I recall getting tours of computer rooms in various research institutes and hospital...

Re: Sightings "in the wild"
Seen this noon (27th January) crossing the road at the junction of Magdalen St and Magpie Rd in Norwich, UK, a man with bright-red hair (dyed), a coat, a black light-weight mini-skirt and black-and-white horizontally striped socks/tights.

Re: The Passage of Time
Right now, we're in about 1932, with some accelerant added. The Weimar Republic fell due to the Great Depression and the NAZIs took over and filled the gap with the subtext of "Make Germany Great Again". That ordering has been inverted this time in the US and whilst the Main Street econom...

Re: New Italian Designer making Ballet Flats and Mary Janes for Men
Many years ago I recall checking Amazon for Mary Jane's and it was near impossible to find them in the larger sizes. Today I got curious and checked again.... the selection has greatly improved... many varieties in sizes up to 12 with a few even larger. About a year ago I bought a pair of navy-blue...

Re: What's wrong here?!
Moon, and others, Please don't go. Although threads sometimes seem to escape, I do value the way this community doesn't (usually) degenerate into abuse and nastiness; I agree with Carl's view that "The reason it hasn't been locked is that so far it's remained polite and focused on policies and ...

Re: What makes a skirt manly v feminine
To my eye the absolute length of a skirt is less important than how it visually balances with the torso. For example, it often works to my eye when an A-line skirt has the same width at the hem as the width of the wearers' shoulders. This works for things from above the knee to floor length in my o...

Re: Job Titles and Gender
When my wife was pregnant with our first child, we received a visit at our home from two of the local midwives, one a senior (female) midwife who was supervising the other, much younger trainee midwife who was nearly at the end of the training course and was about to become fully qualified. Now the ...

Re: Six-year-old son loves wearing dresses
Here's another: http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2013/09/my-son-wears-dresses-get-over-it/279333/ These parents are just letting their kids be themselves. Now, childrearing obviously does involve teaching the offspring not to follow their instincts and preferences in a variety of ways. Don...

Re: British v American English Grammar
In the US we just say it is 8:30 either AM or PM. On the only occasion (actually two as it was a return journey) that I set foot in the United States, it was in transit through the airport in Los Angeles, returning from Australia. We had bought tickets from United Airlines as they were much c...

I too have taken that same route (Newhaven - Dieppe, and back) in 2023 and 2024, both times skirted, for two holidays in Normandy, for which I was also skirted throughout. The only remarks or verbal observations from anyone during either period was from a cashier at the LeClerc supermarket in Étalon...

Re: Fourteen Percent of Men Wear Nail Polish?
[ Pronunciation guide: In that part of the world "boro" is pronounced with the leading "o" short and the second one one long. It's almost, but quite like, "borrow". Pronouncing it as "burrow" is alien in that part of the world, although I did so for a bit as ...

Re: Normal tights - Letting the side down?
I go barelegged with sandals summer and winter - though when the air temperature gets down to 3˚C or lower, and I have to go out for more than 30 minutes, I wear walking boots (Berghaus) and green ex-army surplus socks.
